IRS Audits, Appeals, and Collections: Successful Strategies (2009 Seminar)

If tax law can be called science, then dealing with the IRS can be called art. This class combines both science and art, and we will discuss both the technical issues and the behavioral issues of resolving matters before the IRS. The IRS has been reinvigorated, thus increased enforcement action is not only taking place now, but is expected to increase over the next few years. That means more audits and more collection matters.

This class is unique in that it deals with real life experiences, not just from the instructors, but also from the class participants. Our goal is simple: we will share strategies that are appropriate and that work and that comply with the Internal Revenue Code and the Internal Revenue Manual so that our clients obtain the best possible resolution of their matter with the IRS.
We will cover:

  • IRS Basics: Reading and responding to those annoying notices.
  • Understanding your notice.
  • Power of attorney and instant Power of Attorney using the DA function of E Services.
  • Making the most of the CP 2000.
  • The Freedom of Information Act: this could be the key you have been looking for.
  • Audits: who is being audited and what adjustments is the IRS making?
  • The five-step process to follow to obtain the best results possible.
  • Find the gold in the Internal Revenue Manual.
  • Taxpayer Bill of Rights provisions that definitely help.
  • Correspondence Audits: How to Succeed via USPS.
  • Appeals: Why, when, and how to appeal your case.
  • Constructing a sound protest.
  • Behavioral aspects of working with the IRS, a checklist.
  • CSIRS or Weird Cases: Novel approaches to consider when nothing else seems to work.
  • Penalty Abatement: Still possible. Understanding Part XX of the IRM.
  • Collection Work: The variety of Collection Information Statements, when to file and how to accurately complete the forms.
  • Collection alternatives: From an installment agreement to offers in compromises, choose the right fit.
  • The all-important Collection Due Process, do not let this opportunity slip by.
  • E Services: Using IRS technology to help our clients mastering E services.

We will also cover current developments in the fast changing world of IRS controversy. Become a scientist and an artist.
